Three Types of Business Hosting Accounts
Can someone please explain to me different types of hosting that are available, like shared and reseller and VPS. It's all very confusing.
Hosting providers don't make it easy to understand and know what you get. Each provider offers different packages, which, if you are willing to shop the bigger players can work to your advantage. This guide will help you understand the three common types of hosting accounts.
Across all hosting providers there are three types of hosting accounts; shared, virtual private server (VPS), and dedicated:
- With shared hosting you are on a system with hundreds of other sites (sometimes thousands) all fighting for the same network controller, using the same IP address. Bad neighbors can cause your system to be slow.
- A VPS account or Virtual Private Server is a virtual machine giving you a slice of a larger box, you may share the physical hardware with 20 to 50 other sites. More isolated from bad neighbors.
- Dedicated server gives you the entire box, you don't have to worry about bad neighbors because you are the only one on the system. Best for larger sites with more interactive applications.
Which one you choose really depends on what you are trying to do with your website. Shared accounts are great for inexpensive marketing tests, where virtual private accounts will host most moderate traffic business web sites.
The best way to know for sure is to do a traffic and space assessment along with looking at your marketing plan. Since it can be difficult to more a dynamic website, it's best to plan up. For static sites this isn't much an issue.
